At the age of six, my Mother gave me my first sewing lesson. She was an embroider, thus my introduction to needle and thread! It was love at first stitch!
I watched in fascination as my Mom sewed for my two sisters and I during our young years.
Finally, came high school and Home Economics. It was there, that I was introduced to the treadle sewing machine and eventually the electric machine. The first thing we made was an apron and I was so proud of it. I loved it when it came time to go to the store and look for material for the next project. I could have stayed all day in the fabrics!
Since that first apron, many years ago, I have sewed everything from lingerie to prom gowns to karate outfits to leather coats. For many years, I made all of my own clothing. Since 1967, I have worn out three sewing machines and four irons!
Before joining the Co-op in 2001, my passion was counted cross-stitch! I would work at that for hours. After retirement in 1999, I went through all my cross-stitch books and marked everything I wanted to stitch. I would be complete by the time I was 125 years old! I currently have counted cross-stitch pictures, hand towels, T-shirts and T-shirt dresses in the shop available for purchase.
As our business progressed, we noticed that there were crafts that were lacking. I had been knitting since high school and we had no one else that wanted to put knitted pieces in the shop, so I took up the reins. I currently have knitted dish cloths, hat/scarf sets, and baby afghans for sale.
After our "basket maker" left the Co-op we had a void for hand woven baskets. I was able to take some basket classes and I became hooked on basket weaving. I'm still learning(teaching myself) but I thoroughly enjoy it. I have several different, useful styles of baskets in the shop.
I work on hand-made items for the shop 6-8 hours practically every day. I love doing what I do. If only there were more hours in the day, then I might have time to do some cross-stitching!
